The Festival is an opportunity for us to tell you about the Cinéfondation. Created in 1998 by Gilles Jacob, its history is closely related to the Cannes Film Festival but its mission is different: it works is to give as much support to the new generation of directors, not just during the festival but all year long.
Presentation de la cinéfondation
Created in 1998 by GIlles Jacob, the Cinéfondation has two main missions : helping the new generation of director in their projects, and searching for new talents through an official selection during the Cannes Film Festival.
The Cinéfondation’s selection is an official part of the Cannes Film Festival. Its jury awards a prize to three short or full-length films directed by young directors during an official ceremony, which will take place on May 26th, 2012.
In order to help this new generation of directors, the Cinéfondation grants the chosen ones special access to premiere theatres and locations in Paris, as well as meetups with professionals from the movie industry, on top of financial aid for the up and coming filmmakers.
Around 15-20 films are nominated by a jury, led by a prominent director or writer. This year, the president of the jury is Jean-Pierre Dardenne, who brings his experience and vision to find the future talents of the moviemaking industry. It’s good to know that lots of directors were really helped by their Cinéfondation’s selection, such as Vimukthi Jayasundara (Caméra d’or 2005), Corneliu Porumboiu (Caméra d’or 2006), Kornél Mundruzco (Compétition 2008 and 2010), or Jessica Hausner (Un Certain Regard 2001 and 2004).
We know that the Cinéfondation’s mission is important, and as a gesture to thank them for their hard work, we’ve decided to offer to the jury’s members our latest edition of the Lomokino : the LomoKino MUBI Edition. We really hope that it can bring some inspiration to them, and to all the young directors they’ll reveal !
