Two Weeks with Marilyn: The 65th Cannes Film Festival

The blonde preferred by gentlemen is the face of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This iconic photograph of Hollywood sex symbol Marilyn Monroe blowing a birthday cake couldn't be more fitting as the fete celebrates its 65th year of showcasing the finest in cinema. See more vintage posters from past festivals here too!

Despite never attending the Cannes Film Festival herself, legendary Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe is this year’s poster girl.

Cannes 2012 Poster via Festival de Cannes

From the press release by the Cannes committee:

“Fifty years after her death, Marilyn is still a major figure in world cinema, an eternal icon, whose grace, mystery and power of seduction remain resolutely contemporary. Each of her screen appearances sparks the imagination. The Festival poster captures Marilyn by surprise in an intimate moment where myth meets reality – a moving tribute to the anniversary of her passing, which coincides with the Festival anniversary.
She enchants us with this promising gesture: a seductively blown kiss. The Festival is a temple of glamour and Marilyn is its perfect incarnation. Their coming together symbolises the ideal of simplicity and elegance.”

A happy birthday for Cannes, indeed! Check out these vintage posters from past festivals, highlighting the best in film-making since 1939. (See if you can spot the lomographic one from 1973!)
