Natsumi Hayashi: The Floating Photographer

Looking at Natsumi Hayashi's amazing self portraits where she captures herself floating you'd think it is all done with the aid of Photoshop, right? Wrong! Read on to see how she manages to pull it off.

Natsumi Hayashi is an incredibly talented photographer who has an ongoing project that consists of taking self-portraits of herself levitating. They really are amazing. Check them out:

Looking at them your first thought might be “Photoshop!” but that is not the case at all. She achieves this natural floating effect by jumping…a lot! She has said that sometimes it will take her over 1 hour to shoot a picture and sometimes she has to jump up to 300 times. She shoots the pictures at a shutter speed of 1/500 or faster with a Canon EOS 5D Mk2. When she is going to shoot herself at a distance of 10 seconds from the camera she uses a self-timer but when she wants to photographer herself further away she asks friends to help her by pressing the shutter.

And why does she want to portray herself levitating? In her own wods "I wanted to express myself in the picture as someone free from Earth’s gravitational pull. In being free of gravity in the pictures, I am also not bound to societal conventions. I feel as though I am not tied to many things and able to be my true self.”

if you are interested in her work check out her blog where you can see many many more levitating shots and can read her explanations.

I love it. She shoots digital, we'd need seriously fast film to get this right! Especially indoors...

IT'S NOT EASY FOR FAT BELLY GUY LIKE ME =p IT SEEMS LIKE HER SURROUND DIDN'T CARE OF WHAT SHE'S DOING, WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE IN INDONESIA. THIS STYLE OF JUMP PHOTO ALSO POPULAR IN INDONESIA FOR ABOUT COUPLE OF MONTH AGO

She does that with such composure. Not sweating or red faced from all the jumping. Amazing.

A friend of mine has dome something similar a few years ago for an editorial series. As I assisted him, I can tell you that this is hard work. Clothes and hair are problematic. To make it look like that you have to catch the upward move of the jump - otherwise it will not look this harmonic. The timing for the upward jump is difficult. Took hours. you can tell by her expression that she seems to do this regular, as most people would not look this relaxed...

Another artist who is really great in Doing stuff like this is Denis Darzacq! His Hypermarché series is awesome! http://www.denis-dar(…)m/hyper.htm
