Champion Contemporary is opening its 2012 season with a show of new paintings by New York artist Daniel Heidkamp. Find out more after the jump.
This new group of interior-exterior paintings feature imagery derived from direct observation. Heidkamp fuses his open-air approach with his use of swirling, fleshy, built up layers of paint. By attempting to render not just what is in front of him, but all around, the artist aims to discover a unique type of light and space. He works for hours at a time and yet has to work fast enough to capture a myriad of detail before light and environment change.
He spends time emphasising and expanding peculiar details, paintings within paintings, investigations of colour, temperature and palette, glowing sunlight, and a variety of surfaces.
Born in Wakefield, Massachusetts in 1980. Heidkamp currently lives and works in Brooklyn. His exhibition Glow Drops At The Chill Spot is on view at Champion Contemporary, 800 Brazos Street at 8th St., Austin TX from Wednesday to Saturday, 11 – 6 PM, until February 25th, 2012.
