Artist Alex Gross gives these vintage 19th Century cabinet photos a twist by painting over and transforming them into colorful portraits of pop culture characters. Read more after the jump.
Alex Gross is a California based artist who specializes in oil paintings. He’s involved in the lowbrow or Pop Surrealism movement since the early ’90s and has done numerous exhibitions both solo and group.
For his next exhibition entitled Product Placement, he does a mash-up of old school and modern with his mixed media series where he uses vintage 1870s photographs and paints over them, turning them into various fantasy and comic book characters.
The series borrows the collectible card aesthetics and includes our favorite popular Marvel and DC characters in like Wolverine and Batman, as well as some characters from Star Wars and Star Trek, and not to mention a few Japanese characters like Godzilla.

I love the first three with Bizarro Superman, and my personal favorite, Aquaman.
