Eugene Atget MoMA Exhibit to Open on February 6

A selection of celebrated French photographer Eugene Atget's works will be showcased in an upcoming exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. Read the details after the jump!

Although his snapshots of Parisian architecture and street scenes only garnered acclaim after his death in 1927, Eugene Atget nevertheless joined the ranks of photography masters for his work. He remains one of the most respected photographers in the world today for his unique work, which served as a classic catalog of Parisian life and French culture.

In celebration of Atget’s mastery, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will be showcasing his work in an upcoming exhibition. The exhibit is entitled “Eugène Atget: “Documents pour artistes” in reference to sign outside the master photographer’s studio, said to declare his humble ambition to “create images for other artists to use as source material.” It will be comprised by his photographs of well-known Parisian areas and landmarks, such as the fifth arrondissement, parks at Sceaux, rural courtyards, and Luxembourg gardens. Portions of the exhibit will also showcase his other equally interesting and intriguing works, such as his “Surrealist” snapshots of mannequins, street fairs, and store windows.
