Last weekend saw 14 Northern lomographers meet up for a trip around town. Although the event did not go exactly to plan, it was nice to see some familiar and some new faces taking part. More details after the break!
Although we started with good weather, and even better intentions, this event turned into a bit of a nightmare! We met up at 1pm in Leeds station and headed straight to a pub, you know for essential bonding and catching up – necessary really when you think about it. Then our first stop was the “Occupy Camp” on City Square opposite the train station to see how those guys were doing now the weather has taken a turn for the worst (for more info about Occupy Leeds, see my article dated 8 December 2011).
Then on Rhianne’s recommendation we headed down to the corn exchange as there was a vintage fair on so we decided this was worth a look.
We thought we had been quite lucky really because whilst we were shopping in here there had been a short sharp rain shower outside! When this had blown over we decided to walk through town up to the German Christmas Market as advertised, stopping to see the Victoria Quarter on the way.
Then our luck ran out and the heavens opened before we had even made it half way to our final destination! Moving as quickly as possible we got to the Market to find a mile long (literally!) queue for the beer tents! This was a problem. Plus we had lost several people in the crowds, the cash point had no money in it and we were damp to say the least. Some debate ensued about where we ought to go next, and while this was ongoing, we all got a hotdog and ate it standing up in the pouring rain. Plus I only took one photo at the market which was a bit of a fail.
What happened next can (and was by the lovely nicolas_noir) only be described as a dry pub crawl, where we moved from packed venue to packed venue and didn’t buy a single drink. By the time we finally made it to an empty but somewhat questionable cocktail bar named “Woo Woo” we had lost about 5 people, I was stressed about the disaster of the day we’d had and the remainder of the group was soaked through! Obviously because of the stress levels (and because it was happy hour and it seemed rude not to) I had to then order 2 cocktails for myself to drink through the pain. Fortunately for me the woman in the bar had no grasp of measures so I ended up with a ‘Long Island Iced Tea’ containing about 8 shots and a ‘Sex on the Beach’ that tasted like methylated spirits. After this I was a lot more relaxed about the unfortunate event I had just planned and my night descended into chaos from here on in.
For all the people who came on this unfortunate event I apologise for my terrible terrible planning ability! For anyone who came to the more successful York trip – please tell the newbies I am not usually so rubbish! And for anyone who feels like their day was wasted I would like to tell them 3 things to make them feel better:
- My evening ended with me urinating somewhere I shouldn’t.
- I spent over £50 on alcohol that night (due to the trauma I suspect).
- I didn’t take my new La Sardina off ‘B’ all day, grrrr!
