Maaike loves to play around with his analogue cameras. She has accumulated quite a collection over the years, from lomographic favorites (like the SuperSampler) to heavy duty TLRs, to yard sale classics (like the Agfa isomat-rapid and the Brownie box camera). Since a camera is only truly a camera when it’s being used, Maaike says, she tries to use all of his cameras only once in a while. Her favorite is the compact and versatile Olympus XA. Experimenting with different films, home-made pinhole cameras, and other old cameras is one of her most loved pastimes.

Maaike also loves hiking. To her, it is the most analogue way of traveling. She adores it so much that she’s not going to wait until summertime to do it. Her hiking season will start as early as January; she and her friends are going to Petit Suisse in Luxemburg where they shall be hiking trough the woods (hopefully through the snow), camping out, and having a blast. Later next year, Maaike will be snowshoe-hiking in Norway, hiking in Germany, in Greenland, and Iceland. So yeah, no sunny beaches for our dear stratski, she love love loves the cold! She instills, “You have not really lived untill you’ve walked a mile in frozen shoes.”

“Now what could be better then combining two hobbies and sharing the love? Every month I’ll be taking you along on my hikes trough the cold. I’ll show you how beautiful the north can be, what it’s like to camp out in the snow, and how big and empty the world can be when you’re on foot. You’ll find out how to prepare for a winter hike, how film and camera behave in sub-zero temperatures, how to handle the lighting conditions in dark wintery forests and glaring white snowfields, and who knows what else! In between hiking, I’ll also be talking a bit about some hiking/wildlife type of films, about photography heroes that inspire me, and many more.”stratski

The international Magazine team of Lomography is currently looking for dedicated writers who are interested in contributing articles (to any section) on a regular basis. Eager and interested? Read this call-out article and we’ll be waiting for your emails!
