Recap: Instameet and Lomography Talk Mix

Instagram-based enthusiasts met last October 15, 2011 in what we call an "instameet". There were many events lined-up for the gathering. The meet-up kicked-off with a short talk on Lomography which I gave. Many "instagrammers" or "igers" are interested in Lomography, thanks to the various lomo apps (for iPhones, iPods, and iPads) and filters that simulate the lomo-look.

Everyone was excited about finally meeting each other, most of whom we only knew via our photos and pseudonyms in Instagram (IG). After registering and putting our “best” instagram shots on a makeshift wall outside the Cafe, people started settling down, eating their snack, courtesy of the host Digital Hub.

I finally gave my talk and for the first time, without notes and a visual presentation… kinda hard if you are talking about photos but all is good. I gave a quick history of Lomography and LSI, gave the characteristics of lomo photos which the participants are already familiar with. Then I proceeded to talking about the LC-A+ and some other lomo cameras. I capped the talk with the 10 golden rules of Lomography.

I showed how close you could shoot the LC-A+ and hence create a shallow depth-of-field.

I also demonstrated some of the golden rules like shooting from the hip, shoot the objects of your lomographic desire (there were some cuties there, hehe), don’t think—just shoot (that was easy), you don’t know what you have captured before or after (that’s for doubles).

After the lecture, we raffled-off several prizes (just an iPod touch, a couple of Crumpler bags and some iPhone cases, and iTunes cards—not much, right… I didn’t win any and I’m not gripping). There was also an on-the-spot photo contest (a collage of 4 photos with respective themes). We also awarded the best Pinoy IG Photo Master. There were 10 nominees—they were all good too.

The night was young and after the event proper most of the guys ended up in the bars around Eastwood, and had a good time with their new-found friends from Instagram. Needless to say, a good number also got interested in lomography and will surely explore the possibilities of film photography as an alternative to shooting with their iPods and iPhones.

Like the options, but I still think that digital LOMO is cheating. (I have a VQ1005, so I'm not judging.)
