Every year since 2002, Art Review Magazine has published a Power 100 list of collectors, gallerists, museum directors, artists, curators, critics etc., etc., This November, photographer Cindy Sherman, who was last year’s number 27, came in at a cool no. 7!
From 27 to 7 in 12 months… Hmmm, might this have anything to do with one of Sherman’s early centrefolds having sold last May for a stunning $3.89 million – making it THE most expensive photograph ever sold at auction? Or is it perhaps because of her MoMA retrospective coming up in February 2012?
Bringing together more than 180 photographs, the retrospective plans to trace the artist’s career from the mid 1970s to the present. The exhibition will highlight in-depth presentations of her key series, including the Untitled Film Stills (1977–80); her ornate history portraits (1989–90) and her larger-than-life society portraits (2008). Sherman’s recent photographic murals (2010) will also be included.
Will she soar even higher in the list come next November? I very much doubt it, but there’s only one sure way to find out: sit tight and find out what 2012 has in store for photography’s female chameleon.
