We are proud to present our brand new Colors section – a visual search tool for finding Lomographs! How does it work, you ask? Read on and find out...
Colors has five main sections. The first, shown above, is our lovely photo rainbow, a collection of over 500 Lomography photos arranged by their dominant color to form the spectrum of a rainbow.
For finding certain colors, you can browse photos by Hue value or Hex value. Hue is the photo’s pure color, fully saturated and extremely bright. You’ll find vibrant eye-popping photos there, like these:
Hex values, meanwhile, are the 6-digit values used primarily in web design. Hex values allow you to explore a full range of colors: desaturated, dark – any colors which aren’t pure hue values. We’ve prepared a collection of common colors to explore on the Hex page:
If you’re more interested in finding a photo ‘mood’, you can explore black and white photos to find all the photos with only black, white, and greyscale colors.
To darken or lighten the mood even further, we also have dark photos which will be mostly black with some color splashes, and light photos, low contrast, washed-out, and generally bright photos.
Everything can be found in the Colors section of Photos. Explore around and please give us your feedback in the comments for this article! We’d love it if you could find your favourite color on the Hex page and post the name and a link to the color in the comments. I’ll start with the amazing Neon Carrot!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
disdis
how did you find all the pictures? Tags?
recurving
@disdis: no, we process the photo, calculate the most common color and search by them!

Sapphire!!! oooohh my eyes!!

That's lovely! But I don't understand how the pictures are being added to the categories? By tagging? Or does someone choose them? Because I think there must be much more, say, B&W pictures on here than the 17 pages listed in the section :)
laurasulilly
whops, I only just saw the reply of @recurving. still don't really get it, though. does it mean it's another handpicked section, but this time by colour?
disdis
@recurving wow.... so it's a search engine or something like that. Is it automatic or it needs a lot of work to get the list of pictures? I'm amazed!
recurving
@laurasulilly: our script isn't done with all photos yet (we take one photo, calculate the colors, go to the next photo, …) – right now there are 315,304 photos calculated, but we are adding new ones every day. and to ensure quality we only show photos with a certain amount of popularity right now.
recurving
@disdis and @laurasulilly: a bit more in detail: we take a photo X, reduce is by script to its most popular colors, calculate again to combine similar colors and save those in the database. on average a photo gets reduce to about 4 colors. when we search for a photo with the color purple we just take all photos that have a similar color and a certain popularity and show the results. for greyscale we take all photos that have a combined saturation of zero.

@disdis: it's fully automatic! :)

@recurving This is epic ! You now have the ability to tailor pick the colours to match exactly a theme in a website/microsite/zine post and so on! - This is a great tool to have available & I bet that a photo ID regards shapes with a triangulation script is also now possible ^^ so in theory you could identify say a cat or a ship in an image via a similar method (in theory) ... wtg guys! - it's a pioneering break through ^^
recurving
@scootiepye thanks! happy to see you like it – there are still some photos missing to be processed, but we are getting there… shapes might take quite some time longer… :)

great new feature! i'd seen one on flickr and was hoping lomography would have one someday- perfect!! it'd be nice if one could select more than one color at a time to search for different combinations too, cause most of the pictures thrown at the results seem to be pretty monochromatic. just a suggestion, no idea how hard/easy that is though :)
mariaratfingers
oh i just advanced to the last photos and they have more combinations of colors, not so monochromatic after all :) i still like the idea of selecting more than one color though
magali
Nifty feature! Seriously loving it.
