RECAP: Spool is in Session @ Lomography Gallery Store NYC

Welcome to class, Lomographers! Interested in learning all the ins and outs of film? Want to develop your own style of photography based on what effects YOU want your photos to have? Then this is the workshop for you!

At the Lomography Gallery Store Greenwich Village, excited students joined teacher Bonnie to learn everything they needed to know to help them choose the right film for their voice and their style.

We started with a brief history of film. We then discussed different formats of film and why you might choose the economy and ease of use of 35mm film vs. the detail and higher quality of 120mm. Then we dived right in to make sense of all the films available. From the difference between color negative film and color positive film, to the difference between Kodak and Fuji. From high contrast black and whites to infrared and expired film, we learned what affects we could achieve, what colors bright or subtle, what nuances we could play with. We talked about how processing works and how to experiment with it, such as with cross processing.

Now that we understood all the possibilities, each of us chose a film and a camera based on our own personal style and what we wanted to experiment with. Then we hit the streets, excited to use our own voices through our personal choice of film!
