Why Are My Notifications Disappearing?

From time to time you may notice that the counter that tells you how many notifications you've received is getting lower. Why is this happening? Short answer: to keep the page running fast. Read a longer answer in this article.

Keeping score

So for every comment, like, new album, mention of your name, … you’ll get a notification. They are shown in the account bar on the very top. This was meant to be a simple way to show the users if something new has happened while they were gone, with the emphasis on new. We’ve also added the “mark all as read” button, to reset the counter to zero.

If you never press this button the counter will keep increasing. As we save all notifciations in one database, this database increases as well and slows down the whole system. So from time to time (usually every month) we clean every notification older than two months. Don’t get us wrong: the comment, like, … is still there, just the notification is gone.

This is a small sacrifice to keep the site fast. Hope you understand the reasoning behind it! Thanks and don’t hestitate to contact us if you have any questions (also in the comments here).
