Analogue Photography and the Fashion Scene: The Face

The current exhibition at Gimpel Fils, London features some of fashion photographer Corinne Day’s earliest photographs created for The Face magazine in the early 1990s. Many of the photos on display include top model Kate Moss who at the time was still 16 and unknown.

The images Day produced for The Face brought out the photographer’s talent and unique approach but also launched the careers of a number of models including Kate Moss herself.

The commemorative exhibition includes images from a number of Day’s fashion stories published in 1991 editions of The Face. The shots feel more like spontaneous snaps than overdone fashion shoot material. Day’s talent as a photographer precisely revolved around the fact that, in her images, she captured all that which was informal. Her photos do not include poses and therefore, instantaneously, the subject does not feel out of reach to the person gazing at the image.

In her work, Day challenged notions of beauty and redefined the fashion photograph. She left her models free to be themselves and to express themselves as they preferred. In turn, Day did the same herself and produced some very notable work.
