Another Side of Sigmar Polke

Leo Koenig Inc., New York is currently hosting the exhibition "Sigmar Polke: Photoworks 1964-2000."

Sigmar Polke, Untitled (Willich), 1972 via Leo Koenig Inc.

Throughout his life, Polke took thousands of photographs. The selection of works presented in this exhibition highlights the integral role that photography played in the artist’s work.

On display are works that were previously exhibited at Documenta 6 in 1977, and the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 2004 as well as an eerie selection of photographs taken at the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo.

In a series of photograms also on show, Polke experimented with the effects of radioactive materials on the photographic process. The developing process provided Polke the ability to create dreamy narratives.

Sigmar Polke, Untitled (Pharmacie), 1986 via Leo Koenig Inc.

Sigmar Polke was constantly experimenting with the medium, and his photographs range from humorously staged ordinary objects to shots he took while traveling through New York, Paris and Afghanistan.
