Global Smurfs Day at the London O2

Smurfs was introduced to us back in October 1958, and back then by a Belgian Cartoonist Peyo. Peyo probably never thought of how big Smurfs would be today, with a movie to be released and day to celebrate them!

Saturday, 25th June, was Global Smurfs Day. The event was organised by Sony Pictures Entertainment ahead of the release of The Smurfs in 3D, which features the voice of Katy Perry as Smurfette.

It is a-once-in-a-lifetime Global event set up to smash into the World Records for the largest ever gathering of people dressed as Smurfs. This event took place in 11 cities around the world. Here in London, the venue was the O2 at Greenwich.

To help break the world record, the O2 invited people down dressed as Smurfs. If you didn’t have a Smurf outfit, not to worry, as they provided everything: the top, the trousers, the shoes, the hat! Even face paint! There were hundreds of people, from babies to adults, and everyone was having fun. What an event!

It was confirmed by the adjudicators from Guinness World Records that there was a total of 4,891 people dressed as Smurfs beating the previous record of 2,510.

This global record was set by people dressed as Smurfs in eleven countries namely, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Holland, Mexico, Panama, Poland, Russia, South Africa, USA and UK.

I didn’t get a chance to dress up as a Smurf but I took the opportunity to find all the Smurf related posters and characters!
