Happy Birthday Rodinal

Not only the car is celebrating a big birthday these days,. No, an even bigger invention of human mankind, the terrific Black and White developer "Rodinal" from Agfa turns 120 years old.

Rodinal was patented January 27, 1891 by Dr. Momme Andresen. It was the first product sold by Agfa and is the oldest photographic product still available. At this time they changed from powder to liquid, so that you just have to add the right amount of water to get your mixture ready to use.

Over 50 years the recipe was a hidden secret but in 1945, when the allies plundered the AGFA factory in Wolfen / Germany, the recipe get also in their hands. Since then, several companies sell the product in a slightly modified way.

If you like to cook it by yourself, here´s the recipe:

  • 75 ml Water
  • 5,5 g p-Aminophenol
  • 4 g Kaliumsulfit sicc
  • 4 g Kaliumhydroxid
  • 1 g Kaliumbromid
  • 2 g NA4EDTA
  • Water at 100 ml

At least, Rodinal is something that seems to last forever in our fast times!

Happy BirthdayRodinal!

Rodinal is great! It was the first developer I used nearly 40 years ago and I still use it today. Check out @eggzakly's excellent article about stand development using Rodinal: http://www.lomograph(…)-to-rodinal
