Mama, Don't Take My Kodachrome Away!

Attention Lomographers and Kodachrome enthusiasts in the USA! Here's your chance to get a slice of history!

A co-worker of mine was cleaning out his office and discovered a stash of Kodachrome film! He kindly offered me this treasure and I accepted with delight. I knew that Kodachrome was no longer being made but I did not know that there is only ONE place in the western hemisphere (Dwayne’s Photo, Kansas City USA) that still develops Kodachrome, and even more surprising was that this place will no longer develop Kodachrome as of DECEMEBER 30th 2010! Yes, this is the December 30th that is 2 weeks away.

And this is why I am writing. I will not be able to shoot all of these rolls of film in time and I need your help. I am willing to send out a roll or two to a few people that reply with their contact information and desire to be a part of this project. There are some conditions to this though:

1. I am looking for people in the U.S. because postage and time to send the film will be too much (I know, I know, I’m sorry about this)

2. You have to promise to shoot and send the film to get developed before the due date! Give your Lomographer’s word on this….

3. You need to post your photos to this site or send them to me so we can make a big posting of the last rolls of Kodachrome. Maybe the fine folks at Lomography will even make this a competition of sorts!

Happy shooting! Be creative, tell a story, have fun. Remember, Kodachrome has been discontinued and the developing will cease to exist within a few weeks…It’s the end of an era.

Keep in mind that this film has been in a lead lined bag sitting in an office for I don’t know how many years so I cannot vouch for the quality of photos you can get out of them, but this is an exciting project and your last chance to shoot and develop a roll of Kodachrome.

Information about developing Kodachrome at Dwayne’s Photo can be found here

From Dwayne’s Photo:
Kodachrome Film Status: The last day of processing for all types of Kodachrome film will be December 30th, 2010. The last day Kodak will accept prepaid Kodachrome film in Europe is November 30th, 2010. Film that is not in our lab by noon on December 30th will not be processed.

I will keep people updated when I know more about how we can post all of our images together .

Cheers
Angie

I still have 3 Kodakchrome films at home. Maybe I should put them in my cameras and send them over the the US as soon as possible. Somehow I have no hope, that they would develop them :-(

Great project! If you don't get rid of it all, Kodachrome is only worth cross processing in black and white development as the colour is added in the unique Kodachrome process!

I'm pretty sure there are no more rolls left, but I'll give it a try :P

About a month ago I found some old rolls of film in the dark room at school, some of them were Kodachrome so I followed my kleptomaniac self; some of those rolls expired on the '80s. After researching about the developing process, I found out that Kodachrome's process is really complex, so I started to worry about how to get them done; I thought about cross-processing in black and white, but I was worried about the times, didn't want to ruin them by myself. Few days after that, I found out about Dwayne's and sent them about two weeks ago :) (two Kodachrome, one ektachrome). I can't wait to see the results! I hope I can get to see at least a picture from each roll (I'm not sure about the quality of the film, but there are great odd there were not stored properly).

Happy shooting for those of you who get to get a roll :D

If you're in Europe and *really* want some Kodachrome, buy it on eBay. I saw there's some 64 slide film available in New Jersey, and they ship worldwide. It can be processed in Switzerland.

Oh god, a stash of Kodachrome 200! Easily one of the most soulful and beautiful color films ever made. I get so sad thinking about its demise. I'm shooting off 6 rolls of Kodachrome 64 I bought over 10-years ago. They were cold stored and I had forgotten all about them until a couple of months ago. My test roll looked brilliant so I'm documenting this Xmas season with the film. Get them to Dwayne's by Dec. 30th, NO LATER! Then it will be the end of Kodachrome forever. Sigh. :-(
