Lomo LC-A at the Public Awareness Project

Spitting is a national habit in China. The Public Health Bureau of Shanghai wanted an anti-spitting public awareness campaign targeting migrant workers in Shanghai. I was involved in this project to create awareness of spits contains germs could spread diseases.

The Public Health Bureau Of Shanghai and Ogilvy Shanghai collaborated an anti-spitting public awareness campaign targeting migrant workers in Shanghai. I’m so glad to be one of the artist in this fun and meaningful charcoal drawing project. This anti-spitting community service project is to make the germs visible. Make the message obvious to the migrant workers. We created charcoal artworks that show how far the germs could spread from its source. And in the middle of the artwork we have an arrow that points to a spot of spit. On the arrow we fit in the message. All the artists drew their very own bacteria and germs, all different shapes and designs of bacteria and germs connected one by one from the middle spot and spread widely 70 meters. Why 70 metres? Because germs are not contained within the spot of the spit. The wind helps to carry the germs that are in the spray of the spit to further distances. According to the Public Health Bureau Of Shanghai, germs can spread to as far as 70 meters depending on the wind conditions.

I’ve bring along my Lomo LC-A+ loaded with Lomography X-Pro 100 and witness the whole meaningful project, the weather was very cold until some of the artist’s digital camera’s battery were dead and not working. Luckily I’m bring my almighty full mechanism Lomo LC-A that allowed me to keep shooting around.

We have independent artists, graffiti artist, fine-art artists, art directors and all kind of artists (and a Lomographer?haha!) were involving in the project. This " 70-Metre Spit " campaign were then participated in 57th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival 2010 .

I think we might need to have another education campaign in English spelling too.

I often see young people spit all the time. I wonder why. soccer players spit all the time. I wonder if it is a case of emulation by young people.
I remember that in 1977 was fashionable to spit on punk musicians!
