Earth Hour, Every Hour

For 60 minutes a year, millions of lights goes out for one cause. Earth Hour isn't a party, but it's a celebration of great cause. With climate change and an increasing strain on our natural resources, it is time for the people of this world to take ownership of our home, the Earth.

Earth Hour 2009 was from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. In anticipation for this event, my whole family had made sure we knew where all the candles, lighters(no torches!) were located. Even after sun down at about 7pm here in Singapore, the lights stayed off. It was refreshing to have the twilight fill the house instead of glaring fluorescent lamps, and birds chirping outside the window instead of the television blaring away.

As we set up the candles, it became apparent that we could make this fun. After a candle-lit dinner, we adjourned to the living room where we played scrabble on the floor. It was a throwback to bygone years, a time with no PS3s or XBOX360s. Yet, we had a great time playing with words and laughing at each other.

With so many candles at my disposal, it would be a waste for the lomographer in me if I did not take any shots! Only film, no digital or flashes (they use batteries!). I carefully arranged the tea lights and snapped away with my Vivitar and my Fisheye. Your imagination is the limit!

Earth Hour may be nothing more than a symbolism but awareness without action is just talk. Simple things like turn stuff off when you are not using them. Once or twice changes little, but once its a habit, you can be sure something is being done.

Make a difference, even a small one helps.
