Fun with Lomo Wins Award

My wonderful Holga and Diana F+ cameras and my quest to inject fun into my work have helped me to win 2nd prize in the Picture Essay category for the Press Photography Association of Ireland (PPAI) Annual Awards.

I’m so delighted with winning an award for some of my work with my Holga and Diana F+ cameras. I work as a sports photographer for an agency in Ireland called “Sportsfile”. After hearing about the Lomography movement from a number of photographer friends and reading about it in a magazine I found in an opticians! i decided i wanted to try it out for myself. I instantly fell in love and remembered how much fun photography can and should be. This is easy to forget when you work at it for a long time. So throughout last year I brought along my new plastic friends to various sporting events which I was working at and began taking a few frames here and there. I loved the results.

My new plastic cameras were the total opposite to my high tech cameras and lenses with their autofocus, long focal lenses, and huge frame bursts, and yet the images I got from them meant so much more to me than the images I churned out everyday for work. So towards the end of the year which is when I start looking back through my years work for images to enter in our associations annual awards I had some nice horse racing images. I decided to dedicate a whole day to a race meeting and see if I could put together a picture essay. I got really lucky with a beautiful sunny day and plenty of inspiration at a lovely old race track. I was really happy with what I got back from the lab. However I worried whether the judges (former world press judge and winners) and my peers would get what I was trying to do and realise that fun was at the heart of my efforts. Having shown my images to a colleague of mine he said he loved it….so I decided I’d take the chance … I’m so glad I did!

I was so delighted on the night of the ceremony having told my girlfriend that if it even just got into the exhibition I would be a happy man, but I never dreamed it would win an award. Also I needn’t have worried that the judges wouldn’t get it as their comments showed that they got it exactly.

This is what they said on our associations website http://www.ppai.ie

Judges’ Citation: Sometimes photographers forget to have fun – in this case it doesn’t look like that happened. It is refreshing to see a person enjoying their job and using a lighter touch and new way to look at a traditional scene.

These comments were the icing on the cake. I love my plastic friends more than ever and will be forever grateful to them for putting the fun back into photography for me.
