Doubles with You: Sarah-Squared!

Two Sarahs come together to form the perfect Lomographic Union: thesarahshow shooting in New York City, and sarahboat shooting in Columbia, SC. The urban meets the rural, the sacred meets the profane, the Sarah meets the Sarah.

We’ve joked about the strange and beautiful juxtapositions of thematic images and elements in this round of doubles – we must have been reading each other’s minds – but it’s really not a laughing matter. Our collaboration on these doubles, known as “Sarah-Squared,” is a testament to the rare beauty and power of analog photography. One of us from a small capitol city in America’s South and the other from one of the most famous capitol cities in the entire world – we created images that are totally unique. I look forward to a third round of doubles in the future.

Thank you to thesarahshow for teaching me so much!

For as much as we Romantics cling to it, film is undeniably an obsolete medium: Hence, just as the Impressionists adapted their landscape upon the invention of photography, we film photographers must adapt our landscape with the invention of digital photography. One of the last bastions of film is the ability to double-expose. Despite their odd appearance, to call double-exposures surreal would be a misnomer; Rather, they are reality imposed upon reality. I like to think of it as the only way to capture Synchronicity in a single image: two or more events which are causally unrelated occurring together in a supposedly meaningful manner. If these images are in any way aesthetically pleasing, it is owed entirely to the cosmic churnings of a coincidental Universe.

That being said, there are too many serendipitous (Sarah-ndipitous?) overlaps in these doubles to not marvel at our groupthink. I shot on this roll first (it’s Agfa CT Precisa, by the way) in August here in New York City, then sent it to Sarah in South Carolina to shoot in September. I used to do a lot of these kind of doubles in the days of yore (with former Lomographers SagaciousJ and HMDIV), but it’s been a while, and I have never gotten such overwhelmingly excellent results. Maybe it’s the shared name, but Sarah and I seemed to be able to divine the other’s thoughts when shooting these. I hope you enjoy them, and I look forward to doing more of these in the near future.

Hmm, for some reason the delineation between our comments didn't show up: First part is Sarahboat, and second part is Thesarahshow. Hope you enjoy!
