My Friend panelomo

Say hello to Jay Panelo, aka panelomo - a Filipino Lomographer based in Singapore!

Jay Panelo aka panelomo is a Lomographer and an architect based in Singapore. His interests include his wife, job, architecture, fonts, graphic stuff, prints … and Lomo, of course!

What was your first Lomographic experience? How was it?

I’m actually a total newbie. I only started shooting Lomo last year. Me and my “then” future wife were looking at wedding photographers and this studio caught our attention. They were into analog style presentations, which looks more like Lomo. It was likely that we choose those studios who have this funky, analog style – which translates to a “Lomo” effect. Singapore has a lot of Lomo shops, and it didn’t last a week before we bought our own Lomo cameras. I bought a Holga 135BC while my wife had the Actionsampler. It’s been more than 5 months now, and we’re somehow floating into the “Lomo” perisphere. I now have a total of four Lomo cameras, while my wife’s got three!

What’s your favorite photography/Lomography trick?

Double exposure via film swap – it definitely squeezes out the richness between two contrasting photographs. Without both knowing what the result would look like.

What’s your favourite camera + film combo?

It’s gotta be my Horizon Kompakt. With my Horizon Kompakt, Kodak Elitechromes always give me excellent results all the time… and the Lomo Redscale rocks! If I may add. :)

Any funny or strange experiences while taking pictures?

I always love how random strangers approach me and ask me what the hell am I doing, what am I holding on to, and why I have these bulky cameras when digital cameras are everywhere. I just tell them I love the smell of film. Haha!

Someone wants your photo up on a billboard. Which photo would it be?

Hmmm, sorry but I’m a bit greedy when it comes to exposure… again, I have to choose one from my Horizon Kompakt collection. The bigger the photo is, the bigger the exposure! I have this photo from a recent honeymoon trip with my wife in Boracay Island, south of Manila. I experimented with some Lomography Redscale films (a Christmas gift from my wife!), and the photos turned out perfect! It’s gotta be that photo of 2 kids playing in the beach with a hammock. They were actually very jolly before I came, and I snapped their photos by surprise. One of my favorite shots ever!

If you could collaborate with someone for a Lomographic project, who would it be and why?

I really admire the work of scootiepye. She’s got this “Lomo eye” which adds up to her funky collection. Why not collaborate with one of the best? :)

A day in the life of panelomo

A day in the life of Panelomo would be full of adventure. It would be fast, and exhilarating! … and then I’ll wake up. Poof!

Name three things that inspire you.

God. Wife. Lomo.

What’s keeping you busy lately?

As an architect, I’ve been busy since I graduated college. It’s been a hell of a ride doing architecture stuff. Good thing I married my very lovely wife. What’s keeping me busy lately? Taking care of my wife and my future family, I guess. :)

Actually, I can’t stop uploading my photos online. This “Lomo” stuff is really addictive!

Recommend something good

This staple food from the Philippines’ ADOBO should not be missed. I frequent http://www.behance.net, http://mocoloco.com, and http://fubiz.net… And of course, my second home – http://beta.lomography.com!

Now, it’s panelomo’s turn to choose his Lomographic friend to interview – keep tuned in as the My Friend chain goes on!
