Today is no ordinary day for one of our most active community members, Dirklancer!
This morning Jeff Nachtigall, aka dirklancer wakes up one year older than yesterday. For this special occasion we had a little chat with Jeff about who he is, his thoughts about Lomography and his plans for this special day.
Tell us a bit about yourself
You all know me as dirklancer, but my real name is Jeff Nachtigall – sounds like a German name, but my family is very much Canadian (at least for the last 4 generations). I have used the name of my alter-ego, dirklancer, since my time in university, about 15 years ago. My roommate and I decided to dress up like “superheroes” and run through the neighborhood to get to another friend’s apartment. He called himself Devon Starfyre, and dubbed me Dirk Lancer. (We may have had a little liquid encouragement) Now I use the name frequently as an online ‘username’.
My current home is in Edmonton, Canada, where I work as the Registrar and Director of Admissions at a Theological Graduate School, I have been working with university students and faculty for the past 8 years. I have also worked as a Purchasing Clerk, a Sawyer’s Assistant, a Food Taster, a Medical Test Subject, a Theater Seat Installer, a Campground Security Guard, and a Member of an Opera Chorus.
You have been in this world for 34 years today! But how long have you been into Lomography?
I have been into Lomography for about 30 years! Sound impossible? Not so. When I first read the 10 Rules of Lomography about 5 years ago, I thought that LSI had read my mind. This was the exact philosophy that I had for taking photos, but I thought maybe I was a little crazy, so I tried to hide it. Now that I see there are a whole bunch of us, I no longer try to hide it. Either I’m not crazy at all, or we all are!
How should one celebrate their birthday, Lomography style?
There is only one Lomography style for celebrating ANYTHING, especially birthdays – take pictures! Lots of pictures! (It doesn’t really matter what else you do.)
Which 3 songs will you be listening to today
This might sound odd, but I don’t listen to a lot of music these days. My work requires a lot of writing, thought, and listening, and I tend to start to sing along when music is playing. Also, when I’m at home, my two children are always asking me questions, so I function better without additional background music. Since you asked the question, I will make a point of listening to some music today, I choose
- Man in Black – Johnny Cash
- The Last Saskatchewan Pirate – Captain Tractor
- When I’m 64 – The Beatles
Which 3 camera & film combinations will be using today?
Today I will use my LC-A+ (as I do EVERY day), my SuperSampler, and my Polaroid Colorpack II. (I’m not sure which film is in any of them right now, but you’ll be the first to know when it’s developed and uploaded!)
Which Lomographic camera would you love to receive as a gift today?
I would absolutely LOVE to receive a Horizon for my birthday. The shots that I’ve seen from this camera are some of the most fabulous images that I have ever seen!
You have over 1600 photos in your beta home, how many more will we see in the coming weeks?
I have a roll of B&W Kodak and something else from my LC-A+ ready to develop, a roll in my SuperSampler that will be finished any moment now, and a roll from my current favorite thrift store treasure, the Vivitar IC101 Panoramic, that is ready to go. (I scan my negatives at the office, so you should see them next week sometime). I also mailed off a roll to maxpinckers yesterday for his current project, so that should be up fairly soon too…
Happy birthday Dirk, ooppps, Jeff!
