Lubitel With a Plus

I found my first lubitel on ebay. She came from Ukraine and had the lovely name 166. Shipping cost more than the camera herself. She arrived and I saw she’d been used before. Some parts were a bit broken or missing. I shot a few rolls, always thinking about the shoot from the hip rule and have not been looking through the viewfinder.

If the camera says 3 meters, why should that mean infinity?!? I did not receive one clear and sharp image. I was angry with my new old camera.

And it took a while till I figured out (thanks graefin) that I HAVE TO look through the viewfinder to get a good image. Testing, waiting and amazing results. I shot more films. Till the lubitel rumble call came and at this point, she was my weapon of choice. Everywhere with me. I begged people that I might take pictures of them (or even their children), cause it is not a discret shot from the hip camera like my LCA.

In the middle of the lubitel rumble I found her younger sister on a flea market. It was the hottest day of the year and I felt I had to go there by bike (stupid idea, cause it was really too hot, so hot a man died on that market). But I knew I had to be there and I knew what I would find and there she was. 166B. I saw her. Immediately. “What shall this camera cost?” I had to sound uninterested enough so that the seller would not realize I must have this camera? “!5 €!” “? hmmm…. Okay… I will take it”

So I had two lubitel sisters and the younger one was working even with flash.
The Lubitel rumble passed, Cologne came. Photokina. I was working there for LSI. Oh what a fun! I looked through all products, LCA+, DianaF+, Lubitel 166+,… Lubitel 166 PLUS?!? No! you are kidding, LSI.

They were not.

I got excited! My heart beat like a drum deciding I had to take her home with me. A brand new Lubitel 166 with an incredible plus feature: She takes 35mm film and you can rewind the film inside the camera. So you have an adapter with you to add any 35mm film. How cool is that?!

She came with me and I shot two test films with 35mm… A tip for any medium format camera you want to shoot with 35mm so the sprocket holes are visible: Use lomo slidefilm. It has only the numbers on it but no stripes or brand names.
