I was amazed when I first got the lubitel. It was the opposite of digital – everything was slooooooow! I had to take my time. No 'click click click' with this beast. Even just getting to the viewfinder took a lot of time and effort, unwrapping it from the camera body. Focusing was slow too – slow but deadly accurate. Trying to use the viewfinder and the distance scale in tandem works best for me.

Framing a subject was sloooooooow too – just knowing which way to turn was a problem as it’s all reversed. There I am – swaying back and forth like an idiot framing the shot.

But In return I’ve been rewarded with beautiful images.I’ve learned to slow down. The lubitel helps me – tells me to slow down, to really look at what I’m shooting, to compose better shots. To be a better photographer – to drink it all in.

The Lubitel is a great camera – take some time to get to know it and it will reward you too with sharp, saturated shots. Different to the LCA+ in many ways – but so much a part of the lomographic family. All hail the lubitel – magic Russian box!
