It's All About The Name - Lubitel!

When I adopted Lomography as a hobby, my husband has encouraged me to experiment by giving me unique photography related gifts for all of the various holidays we celebrate like Christmas, Birthday Month, Cats Birthdays, National Waffle Day, etc. For Christmas 2007, when the presents were placed under the tree, I noticed a small box that wasn’t colorfully wrapped in reindeer or snowman paper. It was humbly covered in plain brown paper with many Russian stamps and an address label decorating the top of the box. The package was sent from Kolomna, Russia and was addressed to me. I thought, “Wow! What could this be?”

It was humbly covered in plain brown paper with many Russian stamps and an address label decorating the top of the box. The package was sent from Kolomna, Russia and was addressed to me. I thought, “Wow! What could this be?”

I opened the package carefully, making sure not to rip any of the wrapping. After about 10 minutes of dissecting the box, I finally unzipped the case and got the first look into my very own Lubitel 166U. I was so excited! I had never seen a TLR in real-life, only sketches of one in an introduction to photography book when it was discussing the history of photography. And now I actually OWN one!

I went straight to my photography book to review what it said about TLRs and to compare the pictures with the real thing. I asked my husband why he picked this specific model TLR and he replied, “I feel in love with the name: Lubitel. It’s unique and feminine, just like you!”

Since that faithful Christmas Day, my Lubi goes everywhere with me. SERIOUSLY :) I just love walking around while looking down through the viewfinder. Not only did it help me get use to the top-down viewfinder but you get to see the world in a different light: through a unique, square reflection named Lubitel.

Thanks for the nice comments! My husband is pretty good at picking the next camera for me to try and I love not knowing what's next. BTW, I still have that brown paper with all those stamps, it's actually folded and tuck in the pocket on the back of my Lomo Notebook :)
