This is My LomoStory ... What's Yours?

I first discovered Lomography when Netscape browsers were all the rage. I was checking out someone personal's website and saw a photo taken with the LC-A. I have never seen anything like it - vignettes, grain, and the explosion of colours. Needless to say I was impressed, but I gave up hopes of acquiring such camera since I was still a student on a tight budget.

I first discovered Lomography when Netscape browsers were all the rage. I was checking out someone personal’s website and saw a photo taken with the LC-A. I have never seen anything like it – vignettes, grain, and the explosion of colours. Needless to say I was impressed, but I gave up hopes of acquiring such camera since I was still a student on a tight budget.

A couple of years passed by, and while I discovered my love for taking pictures, it wasn’t until I saw that Kirsten Dunst film – “Crazy/Beautiful” – when my Lomo-curiosity fired up once again. Kirsten was taking pictures with the tiny LC-A, and the Lomograph that I saw years ago suddenly flashed back to haunt me. But then … (collective sigh here, please!) I had to pay rent and other daily necessities since I was still in school, so getting one was out of the question.

When I started working, I decided to visit the Lomography website again. That was in 2005. I ogled at the more affordable, quirky-looking plastic cameras and was bent on getting one of those. My first pick was the Colorsplash camera – a friend decided to get her own, too.

I’ll never forget the night when I met up with the local seller for the Colorsplash cameras. Going to the place where we were supposed to meet up, I had a bundle of cash in my pocket, and I rode the bus. Had to walk through dim streets and walkways to get there. Upon reaching the place, I discreetly slipped the envelope to my seller, and I snatched the big plastic bag containing the three boxes. I rode the bus in the middle of the night, hugging the plastic bag very close to me as the bus sped through humps and bumps. My friend quickly snatched up the white Colorsplash camera as soon as I reached our meeting place; I had the yellow-orange one.

We quickly loaded up some cheap film and started shooting like maniacs just outside the local mall. We had no idea what the pictures would like, and that excited us even more. Suddenly, an elderly man walked over to our spot and asked us -

“Excuse me, is that … a camera?”

“Yes sir, it is!”

“Oh. It looks like a hairdryer.”

From then on, I knew that the Colorsplash would make a very interesting conversational piece – which was helpful for someone who’s so shy like me … and that’s how my love affair with Lomography began!

Maybe Kirsten Dunst can be the next Lomo Amigo? Crazy/Beautiful was a fun movie. I only saw it earlier this year, but I caught that LC-A!
