Picking the Winners

Picking winners is never easy, and we understand that some of you may question our choice of winners at time, some of you hinting that we have a random system in place doing the work for us. We have also seen several comments recently that many of the winning pictures are good but do not fit the theme of the competition and that submissions are winning that do not meet requirements. That’s why we thought we could take some time and answer some questions.

For each competition that is held on Lomography.com, be it 24 hour rumbles or larger corporations with outside partners such as Urban Outfitters, there is always a jury picking the winning shots. A jury depends on the size of the competition (larger for larger competitions) but there are always at least 2 people at LSI choosing winners, (for daily rumbles, otherwise more). A jury is human, and humans by nature focus on different aspects in photos. Please bear in mind that while the jury tries to be objective, a jury by definition will have some subjective influence.

Winning shots are not picked by a random generator. The jury looks at the submissions, each member makes a short list of his favorites which is then combined. From the final list the jury then votes on the pictures and the winning shots are picked. In the case that a certain photo gets an equal amount of votes then those pictures are voted on again.

Regarding some of your questions as to pictures winning that do not match the theme of the competition, we try to choose a picture that fits the theme sometimes in a broader sense.

As to pictures being submitted that do not meet the requirements of the competition, we have stated in the FAQ that we can not make sure all pictures meet the requirements, this would then take hours of work looking at each picture in great detail. If a picture obviously does not meet the requirement we disregard those. We trust, you, the community, to submit only pictures that meet the requirements and are authentic.

For Lomo Home Of the Day there are certain requirements that a home must be fulfill before being shortlisted before a jury. The home owner should have submitted lomolocation tips and have a minimum of 10 albums. It also helps to have entered a competition, have filled out their lomowall and then submitted their lomohome for the competition. After this, a jury manually picks a home. Of course, exceptions do occur as some homes are absolutely stunning and even though they do not meet all the requirements we award such homes. Be happy for the winner!

An Oktokino award is given and chosen daily by a jury. The jury looks at many movies a day choosing what they think is the best submission. The jury looks for dynamic pieces and pieces that make sense.

OSCM winners are chosen through two main filters, the first filter brings the submission here where they are then eligible for winning the OSCM award. Once there, a jury selects the daily winner.

And now to another subject that many of you have asked about: camera, film and location submissions. We often get questions asking if a submission was not good enough as it has not been published. In order to keep the magazine regularly updated with articles in all sections we may choose keep some of your submissions offline for a while. We also try to give reviews that are written by “new” (those that have not previously submitted entries) members an advantage as we want to encourage diversity. Hence if you submit three reviews and only one get published it does not mean that your other two reviews were bad. It simply means that we have kept them for later use.

Likewise, we do not want to publish to like reviews after another. Hence if we get two reviews for the Diana we would like to publish something in between the two to give diversity. It may happen that we at times make call outs, such as the film class, where we ask for specific reviews. In such cases we will feature those reviews ahead of others that may have been in the inbox longer.

All in all, if you follow the guidelines (camera, locations) your submissions will get published sooner or later. If we see that a review is good save for one aspect (for example missing pictures) we try to contact you to have these added.

We hope that this clarifies some questions!

no objections at all - i think you all do a great job to run as many rumbles and things to keep us occupied - you don't have to do any of it!

    much appreciated!!!!!

For me I realised somehting only recently, I just really like enetering the competitions - and what i really like is the shoot for a competition - if it wins a prize then that is great if not then I still have some images that I perhaps would have taken. I realise that this sounds sanctamonious and sometimes I am unsure as to why a shot wins (my own shots included in that) But i think we ahve to look at it from a slightly different angle - if the competitions wernt there would we still be addicted to analogue and the answer is yes - the piggies just make it sweeter. I realise this rambles but i have had a lot of coffee today and am shaking a little (cue slightly manic laugh)

Hello guys, your text is very clear. Sometimes at the beginning I was frustrated too with some winners but I realised the fun comes not from winning but from shooting! ;-)

all seems fine and dandy, although i would like to win a competition so if you can set up a rumble that can only be entered by me it would be much appreciated. : ).

I am amazed every time i see other peoples shots, especially the double exposure ones, those were amazing, i love the beach one that won

Nice clarification, I know I had been a main instigatior speciafficaly about the urban nomad requirements but I just want to say that I always always always enjoy the winning shots and the diversity and quality of those in the LSI community... also that I am so appreciative off all the prizes and piggies. I just had the teacher in me feeling all enraged when the stated requirements or stated procedures weren't followed in contests---but now that you all are being so clear about how things work and am assuming that this will continue in the future and at the start of a contest(like the great job you did with the redscale requirements) I withdraw any complaints--- ultimately you guys and gals do a great job over there, keep it up

Firstly, I want to wish everyone at LSI a wonderful weekend too!

Secondly, I have no complaints at all regarding the competitions, but thanks a lot for clarifying the process behind it all.

You are doing a GREAT job and all these competitions/rumbles/call-out's fuel me with inspiration to be a better and more creative photographer. For that I am eternally grateful.

The possibiities to interact with the Lomographic community are virtually endless and that is what keeps this site alive and kicking... On a side note: I will never understand how you guys manage to tie this all together and re-invent yourself again and again...

    Much respect and love!
