Behind the Scenes: Q&A with Champi

Thomas de Fleurian, aka "Champi":http://www.lomohomes.com/Champi is a Veterinary Medicine student in Turin, Italy (he's originally from Lyon, France). With his current school course it is quite obvious then, that he's fond of all kinds of animals. We have an adventurous Lomographer here - besides taking photographs, he likes freestyle and freeride mountain biking, freestyle skiing and is willing to try any action/extreme sport!

What was your first Lomographic experience? How was it?
I guess I can say my first Lomographic experience was meeting my girlfriend (MissKhali)! That day she was shooting digital but quite in a Lomo-ish style!! And she then made me discover the great world of Lomography, I got myself a Holga and began to shoot! Oh and how was it? Guess what? It was awesome!

Who is your major influence in photography?
Nobody and anybody… I don’t try to imitate anybody’s style but of course I think I’m unconciously influenced by pictures I saw and liked… Anyway I’m quite a supporter if the “don’t think just shoot” rule, or to tell you the truth, the “no rules” rule!

Among all the cameras that you have, which one do you value the most? Hmm… Tough one! I guess the one I value the most might be my Nikon EM. It was my father’s camera and the first SLR camera I used… But I also love my Rollei 35 which was my grandfather’s! Great quality in such a compact cam! And also my Holgas for modifying them… and… hmm you said one right?

What’s your favorite photography/Lomography trick?
Quite hard to decide between double exposure and long exposure… Let’s say doubles, even more if it’s done with another Lomographer, for the total unpredictability of the results, and the special relationship it can create between Lomographers!

Someone wants your photo up on a billboard. Which photo would it be?
I hope I understood well “your photo” as “a photo of myself”… Anyway this one is I think the best self-portrait I have… I don’t like it so much, seeing my own face in pictures!

Any funny experiences while taking pictures?
One of the first shots I made with my Horizon! I shot with the slow speed… The guy behind the bank got stunned by the sound it made, saying “is this a camera?” (meaning “it can’t be!”) His facial expression was so funny!

A day in the life of Champi:
I wake up thinking “Noooo, I just fell asleep!” and look out my window to see how is the weather… Then I go either to work (in a big white and blue sports supermarket you may know, mounting and selling bikes), or to the vet university’s hospital for some shifts in the orthopedics team. Then if it’s a good day (which means good weather and not much to study), I go for a ride in the late afternoon with my bike, either in street, on our dirtjump trail or in free ride… On special days or when I feel like burning film I take my cameras with me and try to take back something cool!

Name three things that inspire you.
Anything, everything… And sometimes nothing (which I hate)!

What’s keeping you busy lately?
Work, studies (exams time!) and riding my bike (summer time woohooo!)… In fact it’s quite a while since I haven’t had any film processed…

Recommend a nice place to visit!
Any place! I love to travel and discover some new places when I can, I’d spend my life doing this if I could! One of the best place I had the chance to visit a few years ago and really loved was Japan… It’s so beautiful and completely different from here in Europe! I was shooting here and there, my camera hardly left my hands during the whole trip… To bad I didn’t know Lomography yet at the time, but it might be a good excuse to go back there (hmm I’d love to go back to the US with a Lomo too)!
