Iceland – the land of Vikings, hot springs, volcanoes and Hákarl (putrefied shark)…. where the beer flows plentifully and the coffee has kick…. what more could you ask for? The landscape is stunning with active steam vents lining the countryside, basalt as far as the eye can see and volcanoes popping up amidst the dramatic and rolling landscape. A “Disneyland” for a volcanologist like me!

I traveled quite a lot in 2011, mostly in Iceland. I want to share with you the most memorable moments. I hope you'll enjoy reading and checking out the photos as much as I enjoyed remembering my trips.

The day had finally arrived, we were at home trying to fit a camping backpack with fleeces, hats, and boots in the middle of August because that night we were leaving for Iceland! The next morning would start two exciting weeks of travel by car along Highway 1, around the country.

We continue our journey around Iceland; this time we had to take a stroll through a glacier and a trip around all the fjords of the east and north.

My most memorable travel escapade of 2011 is probably the four-day hike my No. 1 guy and I took in Iceland from Hrutfell to Hveravellir. Three days of flat lava fields and not a living soul in sight. It was like walking on the moon.

El día por fin había llegado: estábamos en casa intentando meter en una mochila de acampada forros polares, gorros y botas en pleno agosto porque esa misma noche ¡salíamos hacia Islandia! A la mañana siguiente empezarían dos emocionantes semanas de viaje en coche siguiendo la carretera 1, que rodea el país.

Ya llevábamos una semana en Islandia y teníamos casi otra por delante. Eso sí, mucho más tranquila. Ya habíamos visto las principales atracciones; habíamos hecho unas cuantas excursiones y pateado mucho, con lo que ahora nos tocaban paseos cortos, horas de coche y visitar pueblecitos con encanto.

Island – das Land der Wikinger, heißen Quellen, Vulkane und Hákarl (vergammelter Hai)… wo das Bier in Strömen fliesst und Kaffee den Kick hat… was will man mehr?
Die Landschaft ist beeindruckend, überall gibt es Stellen, an denen Dampf aus der Oberfläche austritt, Basalt so weit das Auge reicht, und Vulkane mitten in der dramatischen Landschaft.
Ein „Disneyland“ für einen Vulkanologen wie mich!

Auf den Geysir hatten wir uns von Anfang an am meisten gefreut. Dass wir ihn erst am vorletzten Tag unserer Reise besuchten, hat die Vorfreude noch gesteigert - und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht!

Eine der Hauptattraktionen im Golden Circle: der Gullfoss, Island berühmtester Wasserfall! Er stürzt über 2 Ebenen 32 m tief in eine enge Schlucht.

Als wir unsere Reise nach Island buchten, wollten wir nicht nur Reykjavik entdecken, sondern unbedingt auch das ganze Land erkunden. Von Bekannten bekamen wir den Tipp, es mit Icelandic Farm Holidays zu versuchen, und das war definitiv eine gute Entscheidung!

Islandia - Isla de vikingos, fuentes calientes, volcanes y Hàkarl (tiburon podrido)... Donde la cerveza fluye en abundancia y el café tiene fuerza... Qué mas puedes pedir? El paisaje es imponente con los huecos de vapor activos que alinean el campo, basalto por donde el ojo pueda ver y volcanes surgiendo en medio del paisaje dramático y rodante. Un "Disneylandia" para un volcanologista como yo.
