With 600,000 inhabitants, Dortmund is one of the biggest cities in Germany (even if it's relatively unknown in most parts of the world). But if you visit the "Westfalenpark" you wouldn't guess that you are in the heart of a major city. The big green space is a perfect spot for relaxation and a photo tour all year long.

The Other Night at the Mine Zollverein: Essen Aglow!
Every summer since 2001, the "Night of Industrial Culture" happens as part of the event, "extra shift". Throughout the German Ruhr industrial sites, dumps and former coal mines are turned into major cultural venues and transformed by artists with light installations, live music, and dance performances. This year I loaded my Lubitel 166 + and checked it out.

  • The Externsteine

    The Externsteine
The Externsteine are a distinctive rock formation located in the Teutoburger Wald region of northwestern Germany, not far from the city of Detmold at Horn-Bad Meinberg. The formation consists of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. The name probably means "stones of the Egge".

    Dortmund: Rise of the Phoenix
I do have a certain "test area" for all my new cameras, Phoenix West, which is a former steel factory. But there is far more to this area than the ruins, rust, and nostalgia. Dortmund is a worker city with quite some tradition. It has been the beer capital and has also been a big site for heavy industries. But time passed by, many breweries and steel works had to close down as parts of the companies got sold to the far east. At least you can still visit some places reflecting the city's former glory.
