LomoAmigos: Dilan Bozyel and Aramızda Kalanlar

Late last year, we hosted an exhibit featuring the works of photographer Dilan Bozyel and musician Mabel Matiz at the Lomography Gallery Store in Istanbul. Dilan agreed to have an interview and gladly answered some questions.

Dilan Bozyel used the Diana F+ Chamonix to take photos for her shared exhibit with Mabel Matiz entitled Aramızda Kalanlar (Stay with us). She shared her Diana F+ adventures, new projects and her love of photography during the interview.

Tell us about yourself.

Hmm I am shooting, shooting and I am shooting again.

Can you share the process that you went through as a photographer?

It's a long and complicated journey but I can sum it up for you:
I dropped out from studying Management in Turkey and started to study Advertising and Art Directing in the London College of Communication. Also, I studied photography in the London Academy of Art. I studied some other programmes like Advertising in Bahçeşehir University, window display design in IMA and I attended a young photographer programme in Magnum Photography Agency.

But the most qualified education that I had is, when I started to work as an assistant. It's a little bit cliche but there's no education for creative fields. There is a life school and you have to study it first. It's exhausting but I am still a student who keeps learning and improving day by day.

What was the first picture that you ever took?

I took a photo with a 35mm disposable camera. I didn't think that I could become a photographer and I really don't understand why I took that picture.

How does it feel to take analogue pictures?

Magic! Abracadabra!

If you were to describe Diana F+ Chamonix'yi in two words, what would they be?

My naive magic box - Oh! It was 4 words already :)

Which photos did you like most?

Every one has a different story but if I have to choose one, I definitely choose the one frame with Mabel Matiz and I will show that picture to our grandchildren's friends :)

Do you use other analogue stuff such as notebooks, records,and the like?

Records, typewriter, old home phones, notebooks, old papers... But I usually play with my analogue camera and notebook.

What have you been doing lately?

I shoot photos, I shoot photos and I am writing fairytales :)

Do you have new projects?

We met with the team of Fil'm Hafızası lately and we have a project that is bound to start on January 31th including IKSV's events. From now on, I can take photos of their events all the time :)

Besides that, I will have some photography and perception workshops in different cities. I will have some new surprises for you and you will smile a lot when you see them. You can track my updaton my Facebook Page :)

Is a particular public figure whom you’d like to take photos of?

Bülent Ersoy.

What would you like to be doing most right now, and where would you want to be?

I would like to be in Kaş beach with a wine glass in my hand and relax. I smile while I am saying it. Mabel Matiz’s words, Teoman-Sahilde Bir Sarhoş can play in the background
