Andy Monaghan of Frightened Rabbit is our LoMovember Lomo Amigo!

2

We were celebrating Movember all last month and we had a very special guest document his time growing his ‘stache. Armed with an LC-A and a load of film, Frightened Rabbit’s Andy Monaghan documented some of their tour and his mustache growth. Check it all out after the jump!

If you don’t know about Frightened Rabbit, now is the time to get with the program! These five guys are genuinely lovely people making indie-rock/folk music based out of Glasgow. Listen to this and then read on, my friends!

Can you do a quick introduction of yourself for our readers?
My name’s Andy Monaghan, I live in Glasgow, Scotland. I love analogue synths, electronics and cameras. Since 2008 I’ve played in the band Frightened Rabbit. I’ve been lucky enough to play shows across Europe, North America and Australia and meet some really wonderful people along the way. My favourite cake is a classic Lemon Cheesecake and my girlfriend just told me I will be getting a cat soon.

What made you want to take part in Movember?
It’s a bit of fun to raise money for a great cause whats not to like about that! I’m very much enjoying my Mo!

Have you shot much film photography before? How did you come across Lomography and what drew you to analogue cameras?
When I was 14 I borrowed my mums camera, it was some point and shoot automatic wind on with a zoom and built in flash, I figured out it could do long exposures and my mind was blown when I saw the developed rolls. I would be skating and always have this bulky point and shoot camera with me when i was growing up. A few years later I got a Canon FT as a present and learned a lot using that. I got a Diana a few years ago and forgot all the rules. I love the quality of the pictures it produces. It’s so smooth and makes some magical images when you’re breaking the rules.

How “Old Fashioned” is your day-to-day life?
Aspects have remained Old Fashioned I guess. The real human interactions of playing shows and meeting people face to face is still a big deal for the band and part of why we’ve toured so much over the last few years, plus actually playing an instrument is pretty Old Fashioned within the current musical climate. However these actions are all augmented by new technologies which enable us to put our guitar signals through New Fashioned crazy digital filters and effects much the same with our digital voices and pictures in the realm of twitter, facebook and instagram.

I think its important to achieve a balance of both Old and New fashions. In my view digital technologies will never completely replace analog ones in the photography and recording studio, they can however be used to streamline the creative process and provide simple solutions to share the content. No software solutions can ever replace my analog synths or cameras.

What’s coming up for you in the new year?
Well I’ll be off to Singapore, Australia and New Zealand for the Laneways Festival at the end of January. I’m very much looking forward to Singapore and New Zealand as I’ve never been before. There’s some recording lined up on the isle of Mull early next year but after that I guess there will be another Frightened Rabbit record to do sometime soon and I’ve a few other musical projects to finish.
