Community LomoAmigo erinwoodgatesphotography Talks Instant Photography!

Many know about the LOMO LC-A+, a crowd-favourite camera here at Lomography, but did you know that there is also a way to take Instant photos with this brilliant camera? Community LomoAmigo Erin tells us about her love for the LC-A+ paired with the LC-A+ Instant Back - Read on for deets!

Name: Erin
LomoHome: erinwoodgatesphotography
Location: I now call London, Ontario home, although I’ve spent a lot of time in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but I’m originally from Australia.

Tell us a bit about yourself! What to do you do, how long have you been a Lomographer, etc.

I’m Erin, I’ve been taking photos since I was 4 years old and I work as a freelance wedding and portrait photographer. There was a space of time in high school when I only shot digital, but going to university for a Bachelor in Fine Arts got me back into film. After finishing my degree, I got a Holga, and in 2010 while travelling in Europe I went to Photokina and got a Colorsplash camera, the rest is Lomo-history! I now use digital for work, film for everything else!

What is your favourite Lomography camera and why?

My favourite Lomography Camera is the LC-A+ with the instant back. The LC-A+ is just an all around wonderful camera (as I’m sure many Lomographers agree) and when pairing that with the ability to shoot instant photos, it has the ability to be as fun or as experimental as you want.

Why instant photos?

I guess I’ve loved instant since I was in junior high and was given a Polaroid Izone. Being able to hold something straight after you’ve taken the photo and have something tangible that is one of a kind is one of my favourite things about instant photos. There is so much history with instants and Polaroid, and I love what the people at the Impossible Project are doing but having a camera like the LC-A+ taking the photo, with its vignettes and sharpness along with the great colour from the instax film is a win-win in my book!

Describe the LC-A+ in 3 words.

Portable, powerful, playful!

Do you have a favourite photograph that you took with this camera?

I have so many that I love for different reasons but I just keep on coming back to this photo from back in June when my boyfriend and I along with two of our friends, went on a road trip from Halifax to the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. I took this shot at the beginning of the trail of our two friends. I love the background scenery as well as the graffitied baracade.

Is it true that you have a tattoo of a camera? Talk about devotion!

I do! I got it in 2010 while I was in Halifax, Nova Scotia as there are a bunch of amazing tattoo artists there. It is a non-descript SLR camera (modeled from a Canon) with film wrapping around it, sprockets and all, with a reflection of a sunset of a palm tree (taken from my backyard in Australia) in the lens. It also has my motto ‘Take a lifetimes worth’ beneath it and it is on my hip, so I am forever shooting from the hip.

Tips for new Lomographers?

Get an SLR camera or camera with manual settings and learn the basics so that you can have a good foundation for knowing what is going on when you get a half blank roll, don’t know what kind of setting/film speed to use etc. Then if you think this is something you will stick with, invest in a good scanner so that you can save money by scanning the negatives yourself. Have fun and don’t take it too seriously!

The Lomo LC-A+ is known worldwide for its amazing features: automatic exposure, extended ISO range, and multiple and long exposure capabilities. Get your own Lomo LC-A+ now!
