One of the Lomography 2011 Cannes Mini Movie Contest winners from Istanbul, Utku Cansu is a student who’s passion is film-making, and has shot a short film atop some glorious, snowy, rooftops. So let’s get in the mood for a snowy winter, shall we?

1. Hi, Utku! Tell us a bit about you as a Lomokino filmmaker.
I’m a 19 year old university student who is engaged to cinema, and is in search of new ways of film-making.

2. How long have you been a Lomographer? How did you start?
I first discovered Lomography in 2011 Cannes Film Festival,where they gave me a Lomo camera as a gift in part of a competition.

3. How do you incorporate Lomography in your daily life?
When I see something exciting or even boring and I feel that I must capture it, I use the cameras occasionally.

4. What inspires you to make Lomokino movies?
Anything and everything.

5. Congratulations on winning the Cannes Mini Movie Contest last year! What was the experience like?
I think it was the most enjoyable and exciting part of the festival because it lets us make a crazy movie and to make a lot of people laugh on the beach!

6. Can you write a haiku about the Lomokino?
Time flies like a wise crow
Only a timeless machine can capture it
All divided and analog like a Lomokino

7. If you could cast some A-list celebrities in your next Lomokino films, who would you pick as your lead actors and why?
My A-list celebrities are and always will be my friends and my relatives because real celebrities are ordinary people.

8. What’s the strangest, funniest, hands-down greatest, or most “unusual” photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had?
On the beach of Cannes, when my actor and friend Cenan Dinç was trying to wear his tuxedo in front of people, who were wearing bikinis and shorts.

9. What’s coming up on the horizon? New projects? What’s in the works and what’s on your mind?
I think I will go on with the short film making until I feel that I don’t enjoy it anymore.

10. Any advice for Lomographers?
As master Jim Jarmusch says, cinema is an open form, it has no definition, so define your own cinema.
