Mephisto19 Plays Around With the LomoKino

Everybody knows him already - mephisto19. He's one of the most active and fully dedicated Lomographers within the community. For us that's reason enough to let him test the brand new LomoKino. Read his story down below and get inspired to make your own movies!

Full Name: Stephan Kaps
Lomography Username: mephisto19
Location: Utrecht, Holland

Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?
Hey, I am Stephan, 31 in January 2012 and I studied to be a breath, speech and voice teacher (method Schlaffhorst-Andersen). I do live in Utrecht since July 2011 though I still study fine arts at Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig, Germany in the class of Professor Corinna Schnitt. Her theme is film (partially documentary). As I am more into photography, sound art and writing, the LomoKino is a great way to get my analogue love into pictures in motion. i also give workshops at the Lomography Gallery Store Amsterdam to share my lomographic experiences. Making nice food (also baking) and eating with friends is very important for me.

How long have you been a Lomographer and how did you find out about the Community?
I have been a Lomographer since August 2005. Once I saw a short report about Lomography on german TV (3sat) and on a concert the drummer of the Band Sanah took pictures on stage with an ActionSampler. As I was there, too, to make photos I talked to him and got my first Lomography camera.

Describe the LomoKino in five words.
Flash, flash, flash – blind, fun

How did you like shooting with the LomoKino?
The first film I inserted in my own LomoKino I bought after testing it at the Lomography Gallery Store Amsterdam I put in wrong and messed it up. But such a mistake should only happen once and after that it runs very smooth. I am always surprised how long a roll of film is and how much you can actually shoot. It does need sensitive films and lots of light (flash) though. And post production (scanning and animating) takes very long, too. I cannot shoot less, so I need more time to create the actual movies.

Any funny or strange encounters you’ve had with it?
Well… On Christmas I could not not use it, so everybody started singing Christmas Songs, the lights were low, candles burning, very nice and relaxed atmosphere. So beautiful! So beautiful I simply HAD TO make a film. I grabbed my LomoKino in combination with the Holgon Strobe Flash and started shooting. It took around three seconds to ruin the festive atmosphere though we had lots of fun. I am very curious to see the results of that and all the surprised faces!

If you could have any person alive or dead (or imaginary) star in you LomoKino movie, who would it be and why?
Do you really ask “why” after me mentioning HER?
Well, first of all I want to meet her. Second – she is a genius! I would so much love to shoot together with her.

Kindly share to us any LomoKino movie you love the most
One of my LomoKino movies I like most is the eggman, a guy who made a performance of baking and documenting eggs in Utrecht.

In general do I love Satomis work, e.g. this one:

Any future plans with your LomoKino? A music video or a short film?
Oh yeah… I already recorded some (strange) music and want to work with that… I also shot several films during Christmas and they still need to be developed and scanned, so a lot is ongoing…

Your advice to future LomoKino users.
oh, and get close!
