Marawa the Amazing is one of the world's best known hula-hoopers! She has hooped at Buckingham Palace, spun at The Roundhouse, carried her circus kit from Australia to the UK and everywhere in between and even been flirted with by David Hasselhoff! She's also a closet Lomographer, with her own collection of plastic lens friends. We gave her an LC-A+ to share her adventures...
City: London, UK
Tell us a bit about yourself….
I am a ‘professional Hoola Hooper.’ I left Australia after I studied for my Bachelor Circus Arts (I actually specialised in Trapeze) Now I am based in London and I travel all over doing my act as part of all sorts of different events and shows.
You are arguably the UKs most famous hula hooper, you’ve even been invited to Buckingham Palace! are your folks proud?
Haha, questionable… My mum, totally! She is so cute – I love having her in the audience because she has those proud mum eyes! My dad.. well he lives in a very dark, academic world and as much as he loves me, he is not exactly impressed!
You made it to the Live Semi Finals of Britain’s Got Talent, do people recognise you in the street now?
If I have my hair out then yea – sometimes! It happens the most when I am travelling by train anywhere out of london with my hoops – the bag is a bit of a give away..
David Hasselhoff was pretty smitten with you, have you heard from him since the show?
Haha, no! he is the best though – watching that footage of him singing in a cherry picker when the berlin wall came down is so amazing. Total respect!
The festive period must be pretty busy for you, what exciting things have you been up to and capturing on the lc-a+?
Yea – this season is mad. I have been on trains a lot – staying in a lot of hotels lugging my bags around – or doing crazy day trips – The Isle of White festival I did in one day – 8 hours travel and I was only on site for 2 hours – so much travel time!! Ive been capturing some of the sites, and some of the fun people I get to work with!
How did you find using the LC-A+?
So easy! Everything is so straightforward – I love the double exposure feature and the simple focus options
Tell us about those roller skates…
Hahahaha – dream come true! I have wanted them forever – and then I found someone who could make them – Hannah Havana who had made a pair that were just for looks not actually skateable put me in touch with a lady who works at the royal opera house making amazing things and she made a steel reinforced frame ( = heavy!) and attached a skate frame and then some paint and glitter.. voila!! happiest and biggest achievement of my shoe collection.
Recently you’ve been working on your one woman show Exotica, that explores Cabaret and circus performers past and present – if you could go back in time and photograph any performer or show what would it be and why?
It would probably be Koringa’s Act. She was billed as ‘the only female fakir in the world’ and did sword walking, and wrestled alligators and hypnotised animals. There is so little documented about her.. I would love to have seen it live. Otherwise any of the busby berkeley film’s being made. that would have been so beautiful to see.
If your photos had a soundtrack, what would it be?
Palance – JW and Blaze
I say a little prayer – Calypso Rose
Pianolo – Perez Prado
What’s coming up next in your world?
