Photographer Richmond Lam Shoots With The LC-A+

Canada based photographer Richmond Lam has recently re-united with the analogue world, taking the LC-A+ with him and shooting some rolls from Paris to Montreal. Take a look at his fantastic photos that stand somewhere between fashion and casual snap.

REAL NAME Richmond Lam
CITY Montreal, QC
COUNTRY Canada

How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to this whole thing)?

I picked up my first LC-A+ in July while I was in Paris, thanks to Tat and Justin from Lomography Hong Kong!

Describe the Lomo LC-A+ in five words.

Hmm… Portable, fun, retro, simple and black?

You have been a professional photographer shooting mostly in digital, so how does it feel like back to the Analogue world?

Since all my commercial work is shot in digital, it’s nice to go back to film for a change. My first two rolls were a bit disastrous and I seriously started doubting my photo skills. But I’m starting to get a hang of it and it’s very liberating and refreshing, not knowing how your photos will come out until later. It brings back the excitement of going to the photo lab.

What got you into photography at the first place?

I’ve always been a ‘visual’ person, and by nature I’m quite a layback observer growing up due to my shyness. A few years ago, while having an early midlife crisis, my ex (who was majoring in photography at the time) turned me onto photography and I realized that I could be quite good at it. So I borrowed my Dad’s old Canon from the 70s and started shooting black and white films. Six years later, here I am working full time as a photographer!

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter you’ve ever had?

Well it’s only been two months with my Lomo camera, but I would have to say my friend Ximena’s surprise birthday party. She had no clue that a stripper dressed as a cop would be dessert for that evening.

If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be (song title & artist please)?

Chet Baker – Let’s Get Lost
The Aluminum Group – The World doesn’t spin on us
Belle & Sebastian – A summer wasting

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph and why.

Morrissey, but maybe when he was younger. I love his music and he just knows what to do in front of the camera.

What’s your favorite photo you took with the Lomo LC-A+ and why?

I’m loving the results of the black & white, and I really like this one shot of the lovely Coey Kerr that I took in Old Montreal. The lighting was nice and the lens flare was an unexpected bonus. Looks like something out of the 60s.

Your models are beautiful! Who are they?

Well why thank you, haha. My girlfriend, for obviously reasons, is in a lot of my candid photos. Without sounding like a cheeseball, I love photographing my friends ‘cos they all have something about them that I find appealing. And the fun part of the job is to have the opportunity to work with creative people, so a few of the shots you see here are from ’work’ shoots, Murray and Natalia from The Dears). I’ve been bringing my LC-A+ with me to shoots, and at the end of the day I’ll put the PocketWizard, which is about the same size as the camera, on the Lomo and grab a few shots, it’s pretty funny.

If you had a big bag of film, a plane ticket and a LC-A+ camera, where would you go, what would you shoot and why?

I have to admit I’m more of a city person…more into street photography then say, landscape. So maybe Japan, so that I can pull an ‘Araki’? Ha!

Any words of advice you can give other Lomographers?

All the principals of photography apply to Lomography like lighting, composition, subject matters blah blah blah… When shooting in color, go all out and do something fun and colorful. In black and white, I find that contrasty lighting seems to work best!

To close this interview, any interesting upcoming project? Are you ready to return Asia?

Projects…hmm. On a personal level, I’m continuing with my portraiture series but I’ve started a new one with couples, whether they’re lovers, brothers…etc.

Could be interesting. I’m starting to work on a new music video, I still have a lot to learn but it’s really fun. And once again I’ll be working with Pop Montreal festival this year, it’ll be an intense five days of rock ‘n’ roll and no sleep.

Yes mostly likely coming back to HK at the end of the year or after new years. Would love to go see some agencies and magazines, so if you have work for me, let me know!
