Alison Zavos of FeatureShoot shoots with the Diana F+
written by alexandrak on October 12, 2009 , 2 comments (3 votes)

Real Name Alison Zavos
Country USA
City Brooklyn, NY

Have you shot with any Lomography cameras before or are you new to the whole thing?
When I was at Parsons, my Graphic Design teacher required us to do a project with a Holga camera. I took photos of my feet walking around New York City. I had these crazy pink Mary Jane shoes, with fuzzy white lambs on them. One shoe had one half of a lamb and the other shoe had the other half, so when you put them together, they formed a whole lamb. That was eight years ago.

If your gallery had a soundtrack what 3 songs would definitely be on it? (song title & artist please)
Be a Fish by Bardo Pond
Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping by Grouper
Age of Consent by New Order

Describe the Diana F+ in five words…
Fun, spontaneous, youthful, easy, surprising.

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had…

Walking around the Little Havana neighborhoods in Miami. It’s such an interesting and colorful area, and I was having a great time shooting. I guess my husband and I stood out a little because women in dressing gowns were coming out of their houses wondering what we were up to. They must have thought we were cops or something. The Diana F+ is good for times like that because it looks like a toy and people are less threatened by it.

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph and why.
Ingrid Bergman. She was very beautiful with soft features, but there was a lot of mystery there, as well. We also have the same birthday.

What inspired you to start FeatureShoot.com and what is your process of discovering new and up and coming photographers to feature there?
I started Feature Shoot because I was having a difficult time as a photo editor finding new photographic talent. There are a lot of wonderful sites for Fine Art photography, but not so much for up-and-coming commercial photographers. The site was conceived as a way for me to build a visual database for myself and other industry professionals, as well as to provide inspiration for photographers and those who just have an interest in looking at new and interesting photography. I get most of my leads through submissions, via a small group of contributors to the site, and as a result of random browsing through books, magazines, and other websites. Random discoveries are the best!

You grew up in Florida and ended up in Manhattan – how does the differences of these places inspire you?

I grew up in Pensacola, Florida, about one hour away from the Alabama border. As you can imagine, it was a very conservative place to be, but also very beautiful, due its proximity to the beaches. I have lived in New York for ten years now, and although I love it here, I really miss that beauty that I took for granted when I was growing up. So a lot of my work is trying to find hints of beauty and nature in an urban environment.

If you had a big bag of film and your Diana F+ where would you go and why?
Back to Little Havana in Miami. I ran out of film when I was shooting there and I was cursing myself.

What advice can you give other Diana F+ shooters?
Don’t take it too seriously because it’s not going to come out like you expect, anyway. Have fun!

La Havana pequeno es muy bonita por la Diana F+. Looks like a nice place to walk around with a camera at hand.
