Community Member dannyfresh Shoots With an LC-A+

Community member dannyfresh took a worldwide trek that produced some amazing images. Take a look at his travels and find out what our latest amigo is all about!

REAL NAME: Danny Fernandez

CITY: London
COUNTRY: UK

How long have you been a Lomographer?
For about 3 years. I discovered Lomo when i was searching for a fisheye lens for my little digital camera, and came across the ‘Lomo Fisheye’ cam. I hadn’t used a film camera for years, but it was real cheap, and i loved the look of the pics so i bought it. From then on, i kinda got addicted to the Lomo, constantly looking through other peoples photos, and fell in love with the LCA+. I’ve been shooting with ‘Old Betsy’ for 2 years now.

The strangest, funniest, hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had.
When i was in Loas, I met a girl on a bus, made friends and ended up traveling with her throughout Loas and Cambodia. One day i was shooting by a river and pulled out the KRAB underwater casing. All of a sudden, she was like “Waaaiiiittt……I’ve seen that red thing before! I think I was sitting in the back of a Tuk Tuk opposite you a few weeks ago”…We worked out that we had shared a Tuk Tuk ride together a few weeks before we had ‘officially’ met and hung out. When i got my photo’s developed, i kept on noticing her in the background of my pics!

If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be? (song title & artist please)

Everybody loves the sunshine – Roy Ayers (my favorite summer tune of all time)
Kids – MGMT (This song was massive as i was traveling through South East Asia, and will always take me back there!) King of the road – Roger Miller.

If you could take your LC-A+ and a sack of film anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
I think Tokyo. It’s a place that i’ve always wanted to visit. With all the crazy lights, colour and intensity, it looks like a cross processors wet dream.

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph?
Jesus. I would take a picture of us Hi-5’ing. I would make millions.

What is your best advice to future LC-A+ shooters
When cliff jumping in Phi Phi – make sure you jump as far forward as possible to avoid the rocks. When in Ko Phangan, don’t drink too many whiskey buckets before doing the ‘fire jump-rope’. When in Loas, don’t drive your hired moped through a river and flood the engine. When in Cambodia, don’t eat fried Cockroaches and Tarantulas. When in Bali, make sure you tuck your mosquito net tightly over your bed – because you never know when 2 fighting rats will fall onto you in the middle of the night. When in Australia, don’t be homeless twice in one week because you didn’t book a hostel. When in New Zealand, don’t drink a bottle of Jägermeister the night before spending a day on a boat. When in Argentina, don’t miss ‘La Bomba Del Tiempo’. When in Bolivia, don’t stand too close to the guy who lights the fuse to a bag of dynamite, before dropping the match ONTO the bag of dynamite (if the wind hadn’t have blown out the flame, my body would be in a million different pieces spread throughout Potosi). When in the Amazon, make sure you swim in the Piranha and Crocodile infested water ONLY when the Dolphins are in site. When in Peru, don’t have a 2 day drinking session before boarding a 40 hour bus ride. When in Colombia, make your own fishing rods out of Palm trees, bottle tops and duct tape. When in Rio, don’t miss the ‘all-you-can-drink-caipirinha’ boat party.

Your gallery is amazing! Where did you go on your worldwide trek?
Thailand. Loas. Cambodia. Malaysia. Bali. Lombok. Gili Islands. Australia. New Zealand. Chilie. Argentina. Bolivia. Peru. Colombia. Brazil.

If you could only pick one film to shoot on, what would it be and why?
Kodak Elite Chrome. I love the intensity when cross processed. I think i’m most fond of this film as a lot of my trip was shot on it. I found a photo store in Cambodia selling expired Elite Chrome (amongst other films) for 1 USD a roll! Bought like, 30 rolls.

You’ve be on a super long (12 months!) trip! What places in London did you miss the most?
Hmmm….I’m born and raised in London, and it was only when i left that i realised how much i love it. I used to drink at the ‘original’ Dragon Bar (Shoreditch) – but since i left it closed down – and i deeply miss that place! They’ve re-opened a new one, but apparently its not nearly as good. But i missed Shoreditch, Bricklane, Camden – all the interesting places with lots of character, a creative vibe and awesome bars. Perhaps the thing i missed the most about leaving my ‘real’ life for a year, was DJing…I was itching to DJ the entire time i was away!

What is London’s best kept secret?

London’s best kept secret – hmmm….perhaps ‘Beigel Bake’ on Brick Lane…its a 24 hr Bagel shop which does the best Salt Beef bagels….There’s also a cafe close to Fabric in Farringdon which sells 24 hr full English breakfast – perfect when you stumble out of Fabric at 6am.

What’s next for you?
Well, i’m back DJing around London (you can catch me DJing at The Grand Union – either Camden, Ravenscourt, or Brixton, most Fri/Sat nights – come and say Hey!), and i’m also working as an ‘Assistant Youth Project Manager’ – working with teens/young adults, running a radio station with them and finding activities to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. But eventually I plan to go on another big trip. Currently i’m thinking about India for 4 months (volunteering in an Orphanage for a few months, then travel), then move to Japan to teach English. And then move to Melbourne, or maybe somewhere in New Zealand to DJ full time. After that I’m not sure. But i would like to spend time living/DJing in New York and Rio as well!

So many great shots from what I am sure was an amazing trip. I like the one (146) where he is holding the gun right next to the sign that says, DON'T TOUCH GUN.

Yeah i actually shot a lot of the trip with a Digital too....but to be honest, most of the pics are still on my camera and haven't even been put onto my computer yet! I value my analogue snaps way more than my Digital snaps! And EVERYONE should go traveling!!! It's such an eye-opener!
