Summer Hot Spots: Platja D'Aro

Only an hour and a half away, Platja D'Aro is a very nice alternative to the crowded beaches in Barcelona. If you get there early, you'll get a very nice spot. It's great to go there with kids and the whole family

Living in Barcelona is amazing – you have great weather almost all year ‘round and the beach is only minutes away. There’s just one thing about the beaches inside the city that is just not my cup of tea: they’re always super crowded and not very kid-friendly, in my opinion. As we sought for a place by the seaside where we could spend a couple of days and enjoy with the family, we decided to make a quick road trip to Platja D’Aro.

This lovely beach town does get overrun by tourists in July and August, but if you go at a time when the tourist flow is not as dense, having a great time should not be a problem. Getting there is pretty easy. It’s about an hour and a half car ride from Barcelona and it’s located on the north, obviously along the coast.

When you get there you’ll see the town has a big main street, like most of the beach towns in Catalonia. The rest are small streets that pretty much all lead to the different beaches.

The beaches are very clean and very extensive, so you can pick your spot and have enough space for your stuff and the kids to play around. Some of the beaches even offer the option to rent chairs and beach umbrellas if you don’t want to carry your own.

So now you know – if you’re looking for a different kind of beach that’s close to Barcelona but much more kid-friendly, enjoy Platja D’Aro. Have a quick look at this short movie we did with my LomoKino.
