LC-A Goes To: Saint Petersburg, Russia

As the iconic LC-A celebrates its 30th birthday this month, we think it's only timely that we look back to Lomography's roots and shine the spotlight on the camera's birthplace, Saint Petersburg. If you haven't been there yourself, or if you have and simply wanted to be reminded of the beauty of the place, we've compiled a few select lomographs taken using no less than the LC-A by our community members!

Many avid lomographers would immediately associate the Russian city of Saint Petersburg to the Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association, or the LOMO PLC, the company that produced the now-iconic and beloved LC-A cameras back in the early ‘80s. Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27, 1703, and is Russia’s second largest city after the capital Moscow. Saint Petersburg was also known as Petrograd and Leningrad for some time in the past.

Tourists have flocked to Saint Petersburg over the years, and for good reason. Touted as Russia’s “Northern Capital” and “Venice of the North,” the city boasts of many palaces, parks and gardens, cathedrals, monuments, and other architectural feats. These include the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; The Hermitage, one of the largest and most significant museums in the world; the Palace Square and the Alexander Column; St. Isaac’s Cathedral; and the monument of the Bronze Horseman, among many others. Saint Petersburg is also popular for the belye nochi, or White Nights, a period between the middle of June to early July wherein the sky appears as it is at daytime even during the wee hours of the night!
