Shutter Stories: Standing Shivering by the Seaside

Every photo has a story apart from what was caught on film. Here, I present some photos and stories from my foiled beach trips with family and friends.

My family and I decided to cap 2013 with a trip to the northern province of Pangasinan in the Philippines. It was our first trip as a family in a very long time, since my dad was mostly abroad for work in the last three decades or so. I especially requested that we go to Patar Beach in the seaside town of Bolinao in Pangasinan, even if December usually comes with sweater weather. For weeks, I drooled at beautiful photos of Patar Beach and looked forward to savoring some beach time that was not too hot, not too cold, but just right.

Upon arriving in Pangasinan, however, we were met with cold, windy, cloudy, drizzly weather. I soon learned that the northern Philippines was experiencing rains and overcast weather due to the tail-end of a cold front. Patar Beach was not spared from the gloomy weather. Instead of basking in a comfortable warmth perfect for frolicking into the inviting waters, I shivered with every blow of the fierce and frigid winds that howled at us on the beach. I found it ridiculous that I was wearing a beach outfit in such a bad weather.

Not wanting to leave the beach without getting soaked, I decided to brave the angry waves and freezing waters. After getting slapped, tumbled, and whirled around by the crashing waves, my teeth were soon chattering and my skin was covered in goosebumps. Beach time I wanted, some beach time I got.

This story reminds me of another promising beach time that was foiled by bad weather. My friends and I traveled 642 kilometers from Manila, all the way to the northeasternmost tip of Luzon Island hoping to set foot on the famed Palaui Island in Cagayan province, only for a northern weather disturbance to thwart our plans. Like the scenario I first mentioned, we must have looked ridiculous to be wearing beach outfits while shivering in the cold.
