The Land Down Under: A Week in Lakes Entrance

Schoolies refers to the traditional end-of-year holiday Australian teenagers go on to celebrate the end of their secondary schooling. Having completed Year 12 at the end of 2013, my friends and I went to Lakes Entrance for a week in December to celebrate. It is a sleepy town by the coastline with lots of waterfronts, perfect for a trip with friends.

We stayed in a holiday house just a few minutes drive from the town centre, which makes a huge difference when you’re not in an urban setting. The lush foliage and wild grasslands that surrounded our house provided a perfect opportunity for taking photos of nature.

For two days we visited the closest beach, which turned out to be a surf beach, making swimming rather difficult (dangerous, even), so we kept to the shore and took in the sights and the sun and the sand. I’d never stayed in Lakes Entrance for more than a day so I was surprised that the weather was consistently sunny, at least more consistent than back home in Melbourne. Not many people visited this beach when we did, so it was a good opportunity to take some landscape photos and enjoy being with just my friends.

However, it wasn’t until I took a walk to the town centre that I discovered the vivid beauty of Lakes Entrance, via a scenic walk by the lake that I had inadvertently come across en route. It was actually quite breathtaking, much like someplace romantic you’d take your lover for a stroll. The lake stretched out to the other end of town and there were even swans and ducks peacefully floating by the edge of the water.

Of course, being maybe just a little obsessed (okay, maybe a lot) with film photography, I went into town to scour its film store, Lakes Photographics, walking out with three rolls of film. So, if you’re ever in Lakes Entrance and need 35mm film, they have what you need. On the way back, I caught some interesting sights, but my favourite place has to be the ice-cream parlour. They make an excellent banana-split sundae, and the interior looked as though it hadn’t changed in decades. I was sent back in time…

I had a really great time there and I would suggest Lakes Entrance for anyone wanting a quick getaway from the city life. :)
