Little Tokyo: A Taste of Japan in Metro Manila

In many parts of the West, the cultures and cuisines of the East are all rolled into a district called Chinatown. However, perhaps in a number of countries elsewhere in the world, there are dedicated spots for major Asian countries -- like the quaint compound called Little Tokyo in Metro Manila.

When you get to the vicinity of Little Tokyo, you can’t miss the markers standing along its entrances. The compound is comprised of several restaurants and a couple of groceries, the centerpiece being the courtyard that serve as a dining area and mini-garden. What I love about this quaint corner is how it’s made to look and feel like a teeny slice of Japan in every aspect — architecture, interiors, decorations, and of course, the glorious food!

I’ve been to Little Tokyo several times more since then. I haven’t tried dining in all of the restaurants there yet, though. However, my favorites are Hana, a cozy corner which serves delicious home-style dishes like omu rice and curry rice, and also the best takoyaki one will ever get to try in the whole of Metro Manila; and Urameshi-Ya, a really nice place for an authentic yakiniku experience.
