Spooky Spots: Husein Sastranegara International Airport: An Airport Next to a Cemetery

Husein Sastranegara is an airport in my hometown, Bandung, Indonesia. It's located in front of a cemetery called TPU Sirna Raga.

Many Indonesians believe that cemeteries are places where a lot of unseen spooky things haunted the living.

Actually, TPU Sirna (Gone) Raga (Body) is a prestigious cemetery where Ir Suratin, the founding father of the first football association in Indonesia, was interred.

However, there had been two acrobatic airplane accidents that happened near the area. The first was during the Bandung Airshow 2010; the second happened during the Bandung Air Show II for 2013 which killed three pilot. These accidents made the superstitious Bandungnese wonder if there’s a correlation between the accident and the cemetery.

In front of Sirna Raga Cemetery, there’s another cemetery named TPU Pandu. If TPU Sirna Raga is a cemetery for Moslems, the TPU Pandu is mostly for Christian people. But, I have also read that Schoemaker, the most famous art deco architect from the Dutch Colonial Era in Indonesia (1600-1942), was a Moslem but was buried in TPU Pandu. Unfortunately, the people living near the graveyards litter and dry their laundry in many areas of TPU Pandu cemetery.

When I did a solo lomowalk at the TPU Pandhu I never got scared because I did it at noon. Because I’m a moslem, my religion taught me to be not scared of anything but God. But frankly, a solo lomowalk at the cemetery even in broad daylight gave me a weird feeling that someone/somebody/something was right behind me. When I look back, there’s nothing there.

Husein Sastranegara itself is the oldest airport that still has an old hangar (protective storage for airplanes). Many people think that it does not represent Bandung anymore because it’s such a small airport for the number of airplanes that come and go. It also shares the space with IPTN (Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara), the national industry which makes airplanes, choppers, and other aircrafts.

I find Cemetarys not to be places of fear but to be places of peace, its only really through horror stories and movies that society sees them as scary places as we associate fear with death but in reality theres no reason to fear them at all, even for those who belive in ghosts and the supernatural as those that lay withing the cemetarys have been given their last rites and put to rest and will be rather unlikely to come back.
    Nice article :)

@segata : Thank you very much for your opinion =) Yes, that's why English said Rest In Peace. But it's very different here in Indonesia because we are thousand (maybe million) years live in superstitious believe. This is made the world beautiful because we learn from our differences.
