Summer Hot Spots: Prato della Valle

Let’s discover one of the most interesting places in Padova, my hometown. Useful for many reasons, loved both by tourists and citizens, Prato della Valle is the largest square of the town, but also one of the largest ones in Europe. During summer this square is a reliable friend!

This square has always been one of the most famous parts of the town of Padova and even though it changed many times during its history, both citizens and tourists always loved it. It’s not only a square, it’s a very useful space, that can be used in many different ways. There’s not only a market (on Saturdays) but there’s also the possibility to play sports (from skateboarding, to running), simply lie on the grass (yep, there’s grass also in the middle) and also shoot pictures.

During summer, this place is quite crowded (but not in the warmer moments of the day) because people like to relax here. It’s quite good from a photography point of view, because of the multiple spots you can find in this square: there’s the grass, but also statues in the perimeter, artificial water channels (between the external and the internal line of statues).

Thanks to these differences, you can try to take advantage of the different light reflections:

  • If you want to overexpose, you can try to use water reflection, or the reflection that comes from the white stones on the ground.
  • If you want to have a non-reflecting ground, grass could be the best choice, remembering that in Black and White the result could be not so cool (sometimes grass becomes too dark in B&W pictures).

Lomo on!
