As we continue on this tour around the world, it's time to zoom in on the lands where ancient and early civilizations prospered and journeyed: Western Asia. Take a look at some of the most magnificent archaeological sites the Earth has to offer in this edition of the Wanderlust Wonderlist!

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia

Location: Nevşehir Province (Cappadocia) in Central Anatolia, Turkey
Date of Inscription: 1985

“In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.”

Bahla Fort

Location: Oasis of Bahla, Oman
Date of Inscription: 1987

“The oasis of Bahla owes its prosperity to the Banu Nebhan, the dominant tribe in the area from the 12th to the end of the 15th century. The ruins of the immense fort, with its walls and towers of unbaked brick and its stone foundations, is a remarkable example of this type of fortification and attests to the power of the Banu Nebhan.”

Persepolis

Location: Fars, Islamic Republic of Iran
Date of Inscription: 1979

“Founded by Darius I in 518 B.C., Persepolis was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire. It was built on an immense half-artificial, half-natural terrace, where the king of kings created an impressive palace complex inspired by Mesopotamian models. The importance and quality of the monumental ruins make it a unique archaeological site.”
