Sweet, Sweet Switzerland: Sand Sculptures in Rorschach

Every year, the town of Rorschach becomes home to a lot of wonderful sand sculptures. I photographed them in the last edition (August 2012) using my Smena 8M during my bicycle tour around the Bodensee, also known as Lake of Costance. Here some shots of these masterpieces made of sand!

Last year, I have had two occasions to admire wonderful sand sculptures. The first one was in Italy, at the sea, in the month of July, in the town of Cervia, while the second one was in Rorschach, a touristic town in the Swiss side of Lake Costance (Bodensee in German language) in the month of August. This town is situated in the north-east side of the Switzerland, few kilometres from the Austrian border.

These sculpures were hosted in a park situated along the lake promenade, a great place to take some photos with the water on the background!

Artists are limited to use sand and water only; no molds, power tools or other chemical additives are are allowed.

For this year, the festival begins on August 10th; the artists will build the sculptures from the 10th to 17th while the exhibition will be from the 18th until the 8th of September. You can reach easily Rorschach both from St. Gallen or from the Austrian city Bregenz, and if you are a cyclist, you can find this city along the Swiss National bicycle path along the Bodensee.

Here you can find the official website (in German language), with the photos of the teams and other snippets of the 2012 edition. Unfortunately, I don’t know the history of this local (and recent) tradition, however, this is a wonderful initiative from a wonderful location where you can find a good bathhouse with beautiful swimming pools and many public beaches all around the lake.

All these photos were taken with my Smena 8M, a lightweight camera that I like to carry with me during my bicycle tours!
